Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
