Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

Some content creators try to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.

According to the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

After moments of entering one group, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Inside these communities, posts display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has already seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
