In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
